Using a 2014 iMac as a second display for a 2020 Macbook Air

How can I use an iMac (21.5-inch, mid-2014) as a second display for my Macbook Air (13-inch, M1 chip, 2020)? I'm looking to largely use it as an extension of my Macbook screen.

The very restrictive hardware and operating system requirements for Target Display Mode (TDM) are laid out in this Apple tech document:

Use your iMac as a display with target display mode - Apple Support

TDM is dead tech. Apple started the deprecation of TDM in Late 2014 and threw the last shovel of dirt in its face in early 2020.

Your 2020 Macbook Air is too new.
