I have a 6 month free Apple+tv subscription from sky tv which doesn’t expire until august. I have just got onto the app via sky and I was asked to sign in and scan a bar code will this create a new account that I will have to pay for?
If not recognized to already be signed in, then the app may ask to sign in (again). Signing in itself is not about subscribing to something new. When using the same Apple ID account, users can have one Apple TV+ subscription on that account; multiple instances of the same subscription is not possible on one account. If you cancel during the (extended) trial period, then the subscription expires immediately. So perhaps wait with your decision to continue or cancel until about 24 hours before the renewal moment. Resuming after canceling would restart the subscription at full price (no more trial).
