iCloud backups

iCloud backups

I have over 2K photos in my iCloud storage. I want to back up a new phone with few photos on it to iCloud, and am under the impression that the backup will over-write the one that is on iCloud now, meaning that all those old photos will be gone from the cloud, and only what's on the new phone is what will be in the Cloud. is that true?

I have actually downloaded those photos to the computer, so I won't loose them. I just want to be clear about how iCloud works. Sure would be nice if those photos could stay in the cloud.

You are fine. All will be added to iCloud; nothing will be overwritten. When there is not enough space, you'll be told elsewise.

A Note on Storage Differences:

iCloud is cloud storage. Your iPhone is device storage. Each has its own platform. You can lean more here: What's the Difference Between Device Storage and iCloud Storage? - Apple Support
