You don't have to purchase 365 to get Outlook, or use the online version. Microsoft has made the desktop version of Outlook 365 free. You can download it from the App Store.
Fortunately, Outlook 365 can import Outlook 2011 data. So it will be able to bring in all of your emails, contacts and email accounts. The one thing in particular the free version can't communicate with is Microsoft Exchange accounts. It's for simple home/individual use.
I'm using it now and prefer it over Mail for one main reason - attachments. I like everything about Mail except for the way it handles attachments. When you do attachments in Mail, they appear in the email body as if you dropped in a photo, PDF or such inline with the text. Incoming emails appear the same way. You can't visibly tell what's an attachment and what isn't. There's no such ambiguity with Outlook. Attachments appear separately above the text.
When I first installed the free version of Outlook, my Gmail account kept getting pushed advertisement emails from MS several times an hour. Okay, that was too annoying. Deleted Outlook and went back to Mail. For whatever reason, I installed it again a few weeks later. No advertising emails. Maybe MS got a ton of flack about that and took the push ads out.
You're welcome. Unfortunately Microsoft cut off Outlook 2011 services some time ago.
I have looked at the free version of 365 but don't like it Was hoping to remain with 2011 but it has stopped connecting to my hotmail server? I get a message saying I need exchange server sp1 update rollover 4 or later and I cannot find that anywhere but thanks for your reply much appreciated.
You could try the version of Outlook in the free online version of Microsoft 365.
