Hi JohnPGrace,
Without additional details on what happens when the scanning fails to occur, more specific suggestions would not be possible.
Start with the article Set up a scanner to use with Mac to ensure that your scanner is properly configured for use with your Mac.
Then, as you indicate restarting temporarily resolves the matter, test to see if this continues in safe mode. How to use safe mode on your Mac provides direction on performing that test, as well as follow-up steps to take depending on the results. If there is software preventing the scanner from performing this may solve your issue.
Regards.

If the scanner is connected to the computer thru a hub, reconnect without the hub. In my case using a different hub fixed my connecting situation which seemed to be related to a high load on the USB bus caused by the old hub. If you are not using a hub, contact epson.
Hi Charles, thanks for your response. I am using a Wi-Fi connection at present. I could wire through a hub but don't really want to. The scanner is part of a printer and the printer works fine via Wi-Fi. I will contact epson if no luck in the next few days.
Hi Bill_T1,
Thanks for your response. I am not very experienced with computers and stuff but I do try. As you say more detail on the problem may help. The scanner concerned is part of a multi function device (Printer, Scanner, Copier) and the printer works well via Wi-Fi with no problems. The copier works well using buttons local to the device. When trying to scan in daily use, the device initiates the processing and the correct image appears on the screen but after possibly 30 - 60 seconds the message "Failed to establish a connection" appears. If I then restart the computer and wait for it to stabilise and then attempt to scan thing proceed as expected, the image appears on the screen and I can complete both the preview and the scan and am able to carry out adjustments as required between those events. I am able to do further scanning for a while but have not yet timed the point of failure, but I think I have been able to carry out further scans for a period of at least 15 minutes or so. If I try to scan again an hour or two later, without shutting anything down, I get the "Failed to establish a connection" message. I have also tried to restart the printer in an attempt to scan, but still get the same message. I will contact Epson if I can't resolve the matter over the next few days. Once again thanks for your reply. John
