As I was attempting to include an image of this "mystery symbol" in my reply, I noticed the SAME symbol in the menu bar below, second from the right: it is called "image insertion". What a strange way to find an answer to my question!!!

I think it mean you've created a landscape type view as opposed to a portrait type.
