Follow these instructions: How to request access to a deceased family member's Apple account - Apple Support.
Most likely, you will need to reset the password using your son's Apple ID. Apple does not retain any record of any passwords anywhere, but you may be able to access his Apple ID and subsequently use it to erase that Mac — whose contents are protected by his login password.

John,
I want to thank you for your reply. I spent many hours on the phone trying to get help. Different departments certainly tried to do their best. But nothing worked. So I thought I would try one more time. If that didn’t work, I was going to the Apple Store and see what they could do.
I called Apple Support and the most wonderful Lady answered the phone. We talked for over an hour. We got disconnected and she even call me back. 👍 She shared my Screen with me and pointed with a red arrow where I should follow her instructions. She made this so simple for me. I was able to reset my Sons MacBook and use my own password . I so appreciate her understanding and knowledge. Apparently Apple doesn’t assign numbers or anything to their Agents. All I know is her name is PaTricia and she lives in Georgia. She will never know how Happy she made a Mother. I hope Apple reads this and trains their Support Staff to be like PaTricia.. thank you PaTricia…you are number 1 to me…❤️
Thank you for that delightful story.
Everyone who contacts Apple Support has some kind of problem to fix, so they are usually annoyed, impatient and impolite to begin with. It takes extraordinary patience to overcome those challenges, even before tackling the technical support questions that arise. Apple representatives are chosen for their ability to convey that knowledge effectively, with empathy and kindness, and I'm heartened to hear that PaTricia from Georgia exemplified that ideal.
A sincere expression of gratitude is more valuable to people like her above all else. Compensation and benefits can only go so far toward motivating people like her to continue doing what most people think of as only a job, so I hope your gracious comment finds its way to her.
Apple might send you an email asking for feedback about your contact with PaTricia. They don't do it in all cases, but look for one in your email.
