AppleTV HDR worked for years then colours becae washed out yesterday

All the colours in my AppleTV 4K menus and most content suddenly became very washed out yesterday.

Apparently this is a known thing, where the AppleTV sends HDR with the wrong color profile or something.

Switching to SDR makes the colours look correct again.

However, my case seems very different from the existing support cases from a while ago I found with a search.

  • HDR worked perfectly fine on this TV until yesterday. No idea what changed. A software update??? I didn’t change any settings or any cable/hardware related.
  • This is a sharp 4K tv. The existing reports I’ve seen seem to have been issues with Samsung and Sony tvs.
  • This was with an older AppleTV 4K. Tried a brand new AppleTV 4K with the same cable and tv, got the same problem. I’ve ordered a new hdmi cable to try that out.

Any ideas what might have happened to make HDR stop displaying properly???

thanks

I suspect your TV. I've never experienced such a thing on my (1st-gen) ATV4K and haven't seen any similar reports on this forum even though I spend too much time here :-). In any event, your test of the newest ATV4K model sort of rules out an ATV hardware issue. If it were the result of a recent tvOS update, I would be surprised.

My LG has a setting to enable "deep color" or some such on specific HDMI inputs... perhaps your TV received an update or for some other reason reverted to default values. I would thoroughly verify all the related settings on your TV and then do the ATV4K Settings > Video and Audio > Reset Video Settings, followed by enabling HDR, gamma etc. If not, I'll keep my fingers crossed that a new HDMI cable does the trick for you.

The TV isn't connected to the internet. And the Roku OS has very few video settings, and I've tried them all.

Also there are many, many reports on the internet of the Apple TV 4K doing this, although seemingly not "spontaneously" when it was previously working. So I do suspect tvOS.

Unfortunately buying a new TV just to check is not on the cards, so I'll just have to live without HDR if there's not a fix.
