Thanks to MartinR Terminal command…

softwareupdate --fetch-full-installer --full-installer-version 10.14.6

It will place a copy of the installer in your Applications folder and you can use that to create a bootable installer.

If you are unable to install available updates, then

Troubleshooting Mac Update Errors:

Try the following...

A. Create a Temporary Admin:

See what happens when you use a new administrator to install this. If it works, then there is an error in your current user.

B. Update in Safe Mode:

If you can't click something, then try it in Safe Mode [Hold Down: the shift key upon boot]. In Safe Mode, Login Items do not open at login; certain preferences are set aside; and damaged system files (i.e. caches) are fixed. Go Here: Start Up your Mac in Safe Mode - Apple Support

C. Use Ethernet:

On the computer, you connect it through Ethernet, going directly into your router. For a Mac (or PC) that does not have Ethernet, this would be the adapter to use: Belkin USB-C to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter - Apple

D. Disable a VPN:

If you are connected to a VPN (Virtual Private Network), then disconnect from it. Suspicious activity can result from using it.

Generally you can find the updates even doing a normal search.

Going to 10.13.6 CLOSED DIWN MY MAIL APPLICATION FIR GMAIL ACCOUNTS.

I now have to get into my Gmail accounts, I have twoc, on Mozilla. This has been a pain as you can imagine. Dear Apple have changed the security requirements. I get a “Do not recognise your username or password” message.

Very unfair as no warning was given. I have not yet been brave enough to rollback to and earlier version. Probably 10.12.6

Be happy with what you have. Give in and stay working. I think there may be other problems as my computer is taking ages to startup even though I have trimmed back the startup number of programmes.

They blame the failure to work on Google but Apple have caused a problem. Many others have had the same problem as me I can assure you. Do not update or change anything as you will lose MAIL APP. I am using my iPhone to answer you. MAIL NO LONGER WORKS ON MY DESTOP MAC!!

A difficult problem for you. Once Macs age they want to sell new ones. You must backup your computer before you do anything so that when things go wrong you can at least restore from there. As I said I think there are other issues that I have not discovered.

I have got advice from CCC about this. Also create another backup or copy of all you data files separately on another external SSD or other.

This problem occurs about two weeks ago. I use my iPhone that is newer for most emails so did not pick it up initially.

You should be able to upgrade to 10.13.6 and then that is the end of the road. Apply would then like you to buy another computer.

My Mail has stopped working and nothing can be done.

No Apple didn't change, google & every other Mail server changed.

Well, Apple has caused it only in the fact that they didn't change Mail in the older OSes to work with today's needs, Apple Mail is tied to the OS version.
