I bought a new iphone from apple store. The model number starts with an M indicating that it is a new item. However when I first opened the box there were dusts and fingerprints on the phone. Is it possible that I bought a returned item?

It is nearly impossible to answer your question without seeing the iPhone and understanding what you have experienced. I recommend that you take the iPhone back to the Apple Store and return it and get a refund. You can do so if you purchased the iPhone within the past 14 days. Once the refund is processed, then you can purchase another new iPhone and inspect it right there at the Apple Store.
