Thank you for your help. I believe I've solved this problem with the help of another computer savvy friend who advised me to perform the following:

"Go to Macintosh HD > Library > Printers > Brother > Utilities > Server"

The solution then required me to drag the entire Brother Server folder to trash. My Brother printer/scanner works fine after having done so, and the annoying alert is no longer popping up.

Hope this will help others who encounter this annoying NETserver alert.

Okay, but that doesn't answer the questions about what it does or whether it's safe to use. Since upgrading to Sonoma, I've been getting the following alert:

I've always clicked "Don't Allow," and it goes away, until next time. How can I get rid of it permanently?

I don’t expect anybody responding here works for Brother, so we can’t answer “safe to use” questions.

If your Brother printer supports AirPrint, you can remove the add-on printer and scanner software.

If your printer does not support AirPrint, then check for driver and firmware updates, and—if the messages persist on the most current driver versions—you can certainly choose to discuss this app and this prompt with Brother technical support. (I’d probably ask them about improving that message, too.)

I do have this Brother printer software installed, as one of the Brother printers I deal with lacks AirPrint support.

Among other mentions at Brother:

It seems Brither might be reworking this design, based on the search results for NETserver at the Brother website.
