Mail version 11.5 (3445.9.7) won’t let me enter new Google password - says Authorisation Error - Error 400 Invalid Request. Solution proposed on Community does not work

i use an IMac on High Sierra 10.13.6

I had to change my Google passwords for security reasons, but Mail version 11.5 (3445.9.7) won’t let me enter a new password - says Authorisation Error - Error 400 Invalid Request. All to do with not complying with Google’s OAuth2.0 policy for keeping apps secure.

The Solution proposed on this Community does not work - the Account section on Mail version 11.5 does not have a password section to enter the suggested “app password” into.

Any suggestions please?

iMac 21.5″, macOS 10.13

Did you change the password in System Settings > Internet Accounts?

Can you log into gmail.com?

It's possible High Sierra is too old to support Google's new authentication. You could try deleting the account from Internet Accounts and re-add it with the new password.

I suppose you could try a different email client. Mozilla Thunderbird is compatible with High Sierra for example. Or stick with webmail. Maybe someone else will have an idea.

I changed my password by accessing the google account via Chrome. following this, Gmail is working fine.. Mail on my seperate ipad pro is also fine, but on the Imac, when i try to update the google password for Mail, on the Internet Accounts part of System Preferences, i get this Authorisation Error.
