Disable Dictation:

Dictation is the culprit here. So, disable it. Siri will also be disabled... About Dictation: Use Dictation on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

  1. Go to: General
  2. Tap: Keyboard
  3. Turn Off: Enable Dictation

I beg to differ, TheLittles. You have physically turn Dictation on, for this issue to occur. However, when Voice Control is on, you just have to speak, and the text will type, without tapping the microphone to enable dictation. (The scenario I’m using is when typing in Text Messages.)

So, Myasolace, if my theory is indeed correct, please go to: Settings > Accessibility > Voice Control. Now, at the very top, use the switch to turn Voice Control off.

I hope this is helpful. Good Luck!

Indeed, it would! Try it for yourself:

  1. Using iPhone, turn off dictation in settings, as you have described above, then turn on Voice Control.
  2. Now, open a message, and tap on the typing box as if you were to type a message.
  3. Now, without tapping any letters, and noting that the microphone is removed because you disabled it, say a few words. They will be transcribed into the text message box.

This is where the OP’s problem most likely lies.

OP, do you see a blue circle with a white microphone next to your time, in the top left corner of your device? This would indicate that Voice Control is turned on.

Oh! But on the contrary, I daresay!

Let me explain:

On the iPhone are two different, unrelated settings. One is named “Voice Control”, and one is named “Enable Dictation”:

Now, you can see in the second screenshot that Voice Control is on, and Enable Dictation is off. Now, go to Notes this time, and make a new note. Tap on the screen so that the cursor appears, then start talking. The text will de dictated onto the screen, even with Enable Dictation being off. You will know Voice Control is on by its symbol (which is circled in the screenshot) next to the time.
