Is there a way to make it to where your message returns to the next line instead of sending the message when you press return/enter?

Is there a way to make it to that your message returns to the next line instead of sending the message when you press the return/enter key?

I'm using the messaging app on my Macbook Air and it sends every time I hit enter instead of returning to the next line like it would in a document

Seems one way of coping with that, is to just hit the spacebar several times to reach a new line in the message. (Else you could use emoji characters, 😃👍 🎶 instead of spaces, if you want to add fun, or colour).
