iPhones reseting automatically and randomly

Hello.

I work in IT for a medium sized company. We have over 1000 iPhones issued to employees and we use MaaS360 currently for device management.

Over the last several days, we have had 4-5 end users devices that have just completely reset at random. They go to bed, wake up, and their device is back to the 'hello' screen, and all data and apps are gone.

In Maas, we can see the device still in there. If MaaS triggered the wipe, (which has never happened automatically), it would show the device as 'unenrolled'.

I'm wondering if this has something to do with the recent 16.4.1 iOS push? Right now it is a relatively small number of devices, but I am worried that number will continue to go up. Any advice or insight would be greatly appreciated.

While the command to do this does route through Apple's servers, it originates in the MDM. I don't have anyone with this issue on any of my platforms. Most likely, there is errant code in the MDM that is sending the wipe command with another command. It could be a workflow using APIs that you or someone in your org created, an API endpoint could have changed functionality, there could be a bug in the code behind the API, etc. It could be a great many things, but one thing it is not is Apple. It would be affecting more than one platform. In December, Apple had an issue where the mass wipe command sent from MDM did not respect the API that cleared activation lock. This affected Jamf, Kandji, Mosyle, JumpCloud, and more. It was spread across the different MDMs.
