Preview not working with Synology NAS

I have a Synology DS420+ NAS and use Finder to see its contents.

When I try to access some .JPEG images that are being stored on it, Preview says: "The file “IMG_5326.JPG” and "It may be damaged or use a file format that Preview doesn’t recognize." Now, the file is definitely not damaged, as I can access it via the web browser.

Some images, which are also .jpegs, are opening, but half or more of the image is in a block of color (see attached screenshot).

The images opened just fine with qView, so this leads me to believe that Preview is the problem. This problem is happening only to jpg images and not other formats.

Does anyone know how I can fix this?

Hello KurtCaruana,

We'd like to take a closer look at this with you.

First, let's test this in safe mode, a step which may resolve the issue if it is related to the startup items, but if it does not, it will help us greatly isolate the cause. Safe mode will tell us if the issue is related to a startup item, third party plugins, caches, fonts.

Once inside safe mode, log in to your account and check if the issue is also occurring or not. Use this article for the steps to get into safe mode: How to use safe mode on your Mac

If everything is working properly in safe mode, but then is not working after you restart the Mac, please check the section titled "If an issue doesn't happen in safe mode" for the next troubleshooting steps.

If the issue is also happening in safe mode, you will need to see if this problem occurs in a new test administrator account on your Mac. A test user will let us know if the issue is isolated to your account, or system wide.

Change Users & Groups settings on Mac

If the issue is being experienced in the test user also, then please check the section titled "If the issue happens in the other account".

Let us know if you have any questions.

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

Take care!

Hey KurtCaruana,

Thanks for trying those steps. Because the issue occurred in safe mode and the test user account, the issue is likely related to the macOS software. Make sure that it is fully updated as sometimes this can resolve software issues: Update macOS on Mac - Apple Support.

If it is updated or updating does not help, we recommend reaching out ot Apple Support. They will have the necessary tools to investigate into this matter more with you: Apple Support.

Take care.
