Some text in Apple's 'Books' won't highlight. Why?

So I've encountered this before and it's so aggravating. Is there a fix? I open a text from which I'm quoting for teaching purposes and I go to highlight a section to read later and it won't highlight. Sometimes it's a few words; sometimes a sentence; sometimes a paragraph or more. But other sections highlight just fine. I keep telling myself that I don't need both Books and Kindle, but this is so frustrating--ESPECIALLY when many of the books cost MORE from Apple, but I love the ability to easily access across all my devices.

Anyone know of a fix? Is this even an app issue or a text formatting issue in the ebook?

I have had the same problem - a sporadic inability to highlight a sentence or two while others on the same page can be highlighted. I find that I can't even highlight a single word in this section of the page that doesn't let me highlight a sentence or two. I just started to notice this problem in Sep. 2023 on book that I am reading. I haven't had the problem before.
