Can I backup my MacBook Pro to a flash drive since I am having problems and need to visit Apple? iCloud may not be working and if they have download the most recent operating system again I do not want to lose data.

You are probably better off getting a large USB-C SSD, which will be faster than an external hard drive. You can then back up using Time Machine or a 3rd party utility like Carbon Copy Cloner. Either type of backup could be used to restore data in case the computer needs to be wiped or replaced to fix it,

No. Format a Hard Drive:
Use a hard drive to create and perform the backup. Creating a Time Machine Backup requires a full format. For macOS12.6, you'll need to format this to APFS. Do so using the Disk Utility.
