Fastmail email app and webmail classified as adult content in iOS/iPadOS 16.4.1 (a)

Why has Apple blocked Fastmail email access when Screen Time is set to restrict adult websites? This affects both my iPad Pro (iPadOS) and iPhone 14 Pro Max (iOS). Fastmail is a very respected email provider which has been in operation for about 20 years.

Only when iOS "Content & Privacy Restrictions" is enabled in "Setting>Screen Time>Content & Privacy Restrictions" and "Content Restrictions>Web Content" is set to anything other then "Unrestricted" (such as Limit Adult Websites), the Fastmail app (and the Fastmail webmail using a browser) will not load. This is after closing the browser or Fastmail app and restarting it to clear the cached data. The screen is blank. Disabling Content Restrictions will again allow proper operation.

I believe that the blocking started with the recent iOS/iPadOS security updates (16.4 or later). This issue affects both the latest version of the iOS/iPadOS Fastmail email app and access to the Fastmail website using various browsers on an iOS/iPadOS device. Fastmail support told me that they have filed a report with Apple to address this bug in 16.4. I just think that it's inappropriate for Apple to block a respected paid email system as adult content which was in use over 3 years before the iPhone (and iOS) were introduced.

Hey there WN5ZBJ,

While we do not know the direct answer to any 'why' questions, we'd like to help point you in the right direction. While you may need to contact Apple Support about this, we want to start with learning more about what's happening, along with ruling out some possible causes:

  1. Was there a time where enabling restrictions on your devices didn't affect the Fastmail app, and if yes, when did this start?
  2. Since you have the latest iOS/iPadOS versions installed, we also recommend making sure Fastmail is up to date: How to manually update apps on your Apple device

Cheers!
