I received a message please update my I phone to lastest version of iOS. I just recently updated to 14.6. Days later I receive a version 14.6(a) says it’s the first ever followed with a letter. This looked to be from Apple but I’m cautious. Is this update legit.

Yes, it's from Apple. Only Apple can cause update notices to appear in System > General > Software Update.
