To erase a Mac before selling, see instructions in What to do before you sell, give away, or trade in your Mac - Apple Support
Skip step 2 (it only applies to newer Macs) and use the other steps in that support article instead.

If you're having trouble erasing your MacBook Air 2017, there are a few steps you can try to resolve the issue:
1. Restart your MacBook Air and try erasing it again. Sometimes, a simple restart can solve many software issues.
2. If the restart doesn't work, try booting your MacBook Air in Safe Mode. To do this, hold down the Shift key while your MacBook Air is restarting. Once you see the Apple logo, release the Shift key. Then, try erasing your MacBook Air again.
3. If you're still having trouble erasing your MacBook Air, try using Disk Utility. Open Disk Utility, select the hard drive you want to erase, and then click on the Erase button. Make sure you choose the correct format, such as APFS or Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
4. Use a third-party utility to erase your MacBook's disk: There are third-party utilities available that can erase your MacBook's disk. Here, I suggest you to try BitRaser File Eraser software that will help you erase your drive beyond the scope of any recovery.
5. If none of the above steps work, you can try creating a bootable USB drive with macOS and using it to erase your MacBook Air. This method can be a bit more complex, so it may be best to seek assistance from an Apple Store or authorized repair center.
Remember to make a backup of all your important files before erasing your MacBook Air. Once you have successfully erased it, you should be able to sell it with confidence that your personal data has been securely erased.

Can you be more specific about what problems you're having? Go step-by-step through what you're doing and where it stops working. Are you seeing any error messages? If so, what, exactly do they say?
