Finder Freezes up & can't access External Drives

I have an iMac that is just out of warranty and is all of a sudden freezing up and glitching when I use Finder. It also completely freezes when I try to access my external hard drives that I've used since 2019 and keep all my files on. I need to access these files and can't. Can anyone help me?


What I've done so far:


  • Updated the OS to Ventura 13.3.1
  • Updated Psd and Ai
  • Deleted old Apps and Utilities that I recognize (some I'm not sure what they are)
  • Relaunched Finder several times
  • Shutdown my computer over night and restarted


The problem is still happening. Also, in Finder when I save files to a folder they don't show up in that folder for about 5 mins or more but they are there b/c if I try to save the files there again it says "that file already exists do you want to replace it?" Also, sometimes when I open a folder on desktop it is totally blank and shows nothing is there but there is actually 50+ Psd, jpg, and Pfds in there and they don't re-populated unless I click "clean up by" which sucks B/c I like to place them manually in different areas of the folder. These issues have been happening for a lot longer.


I have enough MEMORY. According to the Activity Monitor, Memory used is 9GB of 32GB and my HD is using 1.27TB of 2TB


If anyone could help I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

If a simple reboot of your Mac doesn’t fix things, see if the problem still happens in Safe mode (press and hold the shift key down at startup). It can take much longer to safe boot (5 min) so be patient.

How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support 


Safe mode is non-destructive to user data. It’s not a cure-all, but very often corrects weird software behavior by forcing the OS to do cache clearing and other housekeeping. When you're in safe boot, the machine will not be at its best performance, especially with graphics, but that's expected.


Does the problem persist while in Safe mode?


Exit safe mode by restarting your Mac normally and re-evaluate the issue again.



Also, this may be an issue with your hard drive. Try booting in Recovery mode and running the Disk Utility First Aid routine on the startup drive.

• Shut down the Mac. Then press the power button to reboot and immediately press and hold the Command and R keys (⌘R) until you see the Apple logo and progress bar.

• When the macOS Utilities window appears, select Disk Utility, click View > Show All Devices. Select the top-most device and click First Aid. Also run First Aid on any indented drive volume listed below that device.


With luck this will repair any issues that it discovers and get you back on track.

As den.thed suggests below, launch Disk Utility, reconnect the drive and run First Aid on the device and any volumes on it. With luck any issues found will be corrected.


How old is this drive?

If it's more than 5-6 years old, there's a good chance the drive has developed some internal problem of failure. Seasoned users will recommend that you run drive diagnostic. DriveDX from Binary Fruit is one that is often recommended. If it finds any problem with the drive, then you'd be advised to backup that drive asap and replace it.


If Disk Utility or DriveDX find no issue, the problem may be the connecting port or cable or enclosure.

Try connecting the drive to different ports on the computer.


If the cable can be separated from the drive enclosure, then try another cable. If the cable is permanently affixed, then you may need to acquire another external enclosure for the drive inside.


Is the drive connected to the Mac through a hub or dock?

If so, try connecting it to the Mac directly.


Is this a bus powered drive? (Does is get its power from the Mac?)

If so, a better option would be to purchase an enclosure that comes with an ac adapter for power rather than relying on the computer. See BDAqua's post above.

I see in your reply above to BDAqua re: Current required mA... that's the same that I see on my MBP w an OWC Express enclosure, and I have no issue at all w mine. That is right at the edge of Current available, so not sure what that means. Probably can't have two on the bus (?).


If Disk Utility cannot run First Aid because a volume cannot be unmounted, that's an indication of data corruption. This appears to be an APFS formatted drive. Can you delete the troublesome APFS volume? You might give that a try before wiping the entire device.

If at all possible – I know your Mac is freezing – backup that drive. Then erase and reformat it and start over with whatever you are using it for.


Did you consider running the DriveDX diagnostic app?

No, you cannot trust it won't happen again. All drives fail and corruption happens... we just never know when it will happen.


This is why it's so very important to have backups of your data. The more backups the better. Apple has built the Time Machine backup app into the macOS. Another very popular option is Carbon Copy Cloner from bombich.


How important is your data to you?

I shut down them unplugged all drives, scanners, ect and re-started and it was working fine for hours and then I plugged in one of the External drives and it started having issues and then I opened the drive and it froze again. So it definitely has something to do with that drive. Do you happen to know how I can fix it?


Thank you so much for suggesting this or I wouldn’t have been able to figure out what the culprit was.

Thank you for all of this but the problem is still persisting. And when I put in Safe Mode my computer’s fan got really loud , the same thing happened when I booted in Recovery mode and the whole time I ran First Aid on each drive. This loud fan was happening a few months ago but I discovered it was due to Google Chrome so I stopped using it and it hasn’t happened again until now


I wish this solved my issue but Thank you again for the detailed instructions ! At least now I’ve tried these options.

The time there was an error in running first aid that said


”First Aid could not unmount one of the other volumes in the volume's

container. “

”Volume could not be unmounted.

Restoring the original state found as mounted.

Unable to unmount volume for repair. : (-69673)”

” operation failed….”


The drive connects directly to the back of my iMac via USB.


I bought the drive in either 2019 or 2020 and it’s not even a third of the way full.

Sorry for late reply and thank you for all the help. I’ve been trying to back up / get anything I can from the drive but most are not working and giving error messages after hours of it acting like it’s copying but then it doesn’t.


I’ll look more into the DriveDX app but I think this is going to be a mission to just recover my files now.


I think my other external is set to back this one up on Time Machine but I’m not sure.


Is it true that if my external hard drive was a solid state that data loss can’t happen?


if i reformat this drive (after hopefully getting my work off it first) can I even trust this won’t happen again?
