iTunes won't update on Mac OS Mountain Lion (102 Error)

I have an old late-2012 27" iMac that I have been fixing up. I just installed Mac OS Mountain Lion on it, and I'm trying to get all of the software updated. It is my understanding that I can't update the OS until I update iTunes, but iTunes will not update. I have installed all of the other available updates, so I know the iTunes update is the problem. When I try to update iTunes, I get a 102 error: "Something went wrong trying to download the update." I know my network is fine. How do I fix this?

If you are using WI-Fi for the download, try connecting directly to your router with an ethernet cable to avoid any potential comms issues with wi-fi.

Try installing any updates while booted in  Safe mode (press and hold the shift key down at startup). It can take much longer to safe boot (5 min) so be patient.

Have you tried to upgrade the macOS to something newer such as 10.11 El Capitan?

If so, what happens?

I managed to figure out how to update the OS, which was the real goal. I updated the OS to El Capitan using the dmg file from the links on this page: How to download and install macOS - Apple Support I was then able to successfully run updates on iTunes and other applications, and from El Capitan I was able to update again to Catalina. So it has worked out in the end

Sorry, I've been having a lot going on and haven't been able to try this until today. I tried updating iTunes while in safe mode and plugged into the router, but it didn't work. I get the same error as before. And yes, I am trying to update the OS. That's the goal. But from what I've read, I can't update the OS until iTunes is updated. Is that wrong? I've tried to do things like updating the OS from the App Store to bypass it and nothing works
