Shutting Down a MacBook and Powering It Back On While It Is Decrypting a Storage Device

My MacBook is decrypting a storage device. I am considering shutting my MacBook down because it has been on for a few days now. If I eject my storage device, turn off my MacBook and later turn it back on, and connect my storage device, will my MacBook resume the decryption process? Also, is it safe to shut down a MacBook and power it back on while it is in the middle of decrypting a storage device?
