Back up on icloud

It’s a simple question, but frustrating to a user that does not spend significant time on line or carrying a device all the time.

for 10 years, I have used my Apple phones and iPads with great satisfaction. In the past, I would back up photoes and files to my old windows based laptop without issues. My iPad has served me well for everything I do including letter writing, so I have not logged onto my windows based laptop for two years.

so this morning preparing for travel, I thought I would get the 4000 photos off my phone and ipad, to free up space. I was having trouble doing so on my laptop, so I thought about the iCloud.

to my surprise, all my photos are on the iCloud, but I read that if I delete off my phone and ipad, they will also be deleted off iCloud, and Mac if I owned one.

is this true? My son informed me that this is a disadvantage of iCloud. He suggested opening a Google account which I prefer not doing.

the easiest fix would be to purchase another cheap windows based computer and an external hard drive to download photos and files. I would prefer not doing that, and would like to find a way within the Apple family of equipments.

Hello Alltakenusernames,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. We want to answer your question regarding iCloud. If you're syncing your photos with iCloud and delete one photo, that photo will delete across all your devices that use the same Apple ID. For more details on how iCloud Photos works, please click here: Set up and use iCloud Photos - Apple Support

iCloud Photos automatically keeps every photo and video you take in iCloud, so you can access your library from any device, anytime you want. Any changes you make to your collection on one device change on your other devices too

We hope this information is useful. Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. Take care.

If they are downloaded, and you deleted the downloads, then only the downloaded items will be deleted from the iPhone. Items will remain on the device, until it is delete. iCloud Photos is its own service --so, no, all will reside in iCloud, as long as they have been uploaded.

Ok, so we are getting to the root question.

I understand the method of removing photos from my phone and iPad. also how they are as one with MAC, the beauti of it all👍.

But I need to be sure that the photos on the cloud will remain there, regardless if I delete from my phone or iPad.

Then if I desire to edit or remove from the cloud, I can do so as a separate task from my phone, iPad, and Mac.

thank you for your help,

You are welcome.

Yes. They will remain. You cannot edit it in iCloud, but you can only download and upload the files —iCloud is a place for storage.

Download All of iCloud:

If you wanted to, you could download all of iCloud, and search for the Images using the Search Bar on the top-right corner of the screen. Perform my User Tip: Getting a Quick and Direct "iCloud Drive-to-External Hard Drive" Download - User Tip
