Home app does not see my refurbished homepod, and it won't reset to factory settings! What can I do?

I have one of these (MQHV2LL/A) already working as the speaker for my apple TV [4K 64GB (2nd Generation) tvOS 16.4.1] setup, and it works great! We purchased a refurbished one from an online vendor hoping to setup a stereo pair.

I hooked everything up and the speaker won't respond to my phone to transfer. I can't reset the speaker, so it will setup and recognize my wifi and be available for my Apple TV. When I touch or hold down the top plate, Siri tells me "I'm having trouble connecting to the internet. For more info check the home app". No matter what I try the home app doesn't even see it, it only sees the first Homepod which is working great, I have deleted and re-added it several times in this process.

I have searched the internet and tried many things suggested by apple and others, to no avail. I think if I could get it to reset it will work fine but it doesn't hook up to my iPhone 14 running iOS 16.4.1. I'm very excited for this to work, thanks for your help!

It’s not possible for it to be seen in the home app until you set it up with your Apple ID - which you can do once you’ve reset it.

Sounds like it’s the manner in which your are touching the top. When it says touch, press your finger

Follow these instructions carefully (count to 10 slowly, each time it says wait 10 seconds)

Reset HomePod or HomePod mini

  1. Unplug HomePod or unplug the power adapter for HomePod mini. Wait 10 seconds, then plug HomePod back in.
  2. Wait 10 seconds, then touch your finger to the top of HomePod and hold it there.
  3. The white spinning light will turn red. Keep your finger down.
  4. Siri will say that your HomePod is about to reset. When you hear three beeps, you can lift your finger.

“Certified refurbished” from other stores isn’t the same as a device certified by the Apple Store. I doubt these were being sold by Apple because they were discontinued a few years ago. I have had issues where they won’t chime on startup. I’ve unplugged it for awhile and tried again but I must ask what you mean in your OP by “have deleted and re-added it several times in this process”. Did you manage to get it set up into the Home App at one point? If you had managed to do that there is one thing that might prevent the start up chime- if it’s still linked to your Apple ID list of devices. You can check on this easily enough in iPhone settings - your name and scroll down through the device list. (it thinks it is set up). If you see it there then tap on >Remove. Then unplug it for awhile, plug back in and see if the start up chime happens and proceed with set up. Skip the part where it asks you to pair as the configuration will take longer, you can pair it later.

Thanks for the suggestion, and I have been trying all of the above. Well, the way this is going I think there is something wrong with the supposed certified refurbished unit. I have had a good one I got as a gift two years ago, already installed in my system. During this process I actually reset it and re-installed 3 times by just holding up my phone and transferring all information perfectly. It is the sound system for my Apple TV and has been for a while.

This new one never had a white light or chime at startup and no response from holding my phone close or trying to use home app. Following the published reset instructions several times has not worked, including unplugging for 10 seconds and more. The most response I get from holding the top for a long time is the "I'm having trouble connecting to the internet. For more info, check the home app" Siri message. I was hoping that maybe there was some trick someone might know, before I send it back to the online company I bought it from. I have read that maybe it has something to do with my Xfinity gateway router. Thanks again.

Yeah you're right I bought it from a third party, and this one never responded to any attempt, I have two of these. That is why I purchased an old model to match the first. The first one has been working very well for a couple of years. This "new" one is not working at all. In my attempts to get it to respond I deleted and re-added my original pod which is still working great. Actually I have already boxed up the unresponsive refurb to send back for refund. Thanks again.
