Click the (Apple) menu at the top of your screen and choose About This Mac.
Check the Compatibility of your Mac with newer versions of macOS:

iMacs have been in continuous production since 1998(!) in five broad families. So, yes, your sub-model AND you current macOS version are both critical for us to know to effectively help you determine your exact upgrade path, if any.
If your computer is running macOS 10.7 "Lion" or higher, that information is quickly available by doing "About this Mac..." from your Apple menu. Example:
