SEVERE INTERACE PROBLEMS IN VENTURA

Since I bought a new Mac Min (M2) with the latest macOS (Ventura), brand new Bluetooth mouse and keyboard, the interface is sometimes disastrous.

PRELUDE, In case it helps:

• I’ve a BIG screen: 1920x1080px.

• I’m used to macOS since 1984!

• I’m working at least 10h a day on above mentioned new installation, 7d/7.

• For me Finder is like a immense database with many intuitive, easy and very useful possibilities. I’m only using LIST view all files nicely organised in folders. I’m using 7 COLOR LABELS (called TAGS these days) to put together and sort those files. The TAGS help me sorting them by 7 levels of importance to each serie of files I can’t sort on any other characteristic.

This gives you an idea about how important the Finder interface is to me.

1/2. FINDER AUTOMATIC SCROLLING

Whether I’m in a pure macOS application (like TextEdit) or not (FM Pro, Google search, …) the window often scrolls without me asking for. Sometimes even so far I can’t even see what I just typed. So I’ve to stop typing and readjust that annoying auto-scrolling.

In 3 weeks time, I got on update (now 13.3.1) but… nothing changed! I can’t imagine I’m the only one being disturbed by such an inadequate automatic scrolling.

To make it complete: sometimes the current window trembles; i.e. it moves 5x up and down with an amplitude of around 20 pixels.

And to give a second example: when I’m entering a search in Google, upon hitting the return key, the whole screen (¡but NOT always!) scrolls to below the second or third answer Google provides. So just to view the first one, I’ve first to scroll upwards!

2/2. SOUND INCREASEs TO ITS MAX

When I’m listening to music (a) via standard app Music = ex-iTunes or (b) another app (like VLC to watch a movie), and I want (a) to click a song (for whatever reason) or (b) go to another part of the movie, the audio volume suddenly increases to its max (I’ve 2 little but very good loudspeakers), thus almost damaging my eardrums and disturbing (heavily) my neighbours.

These 2 interface problems happen randomly. After 222 days, I still haven’t a clue what causes this very disturbing behaviour.

For the SOUND problem I’m just using the mouse, for the VISUAL problem I’m (mostly) only using the keyboard.

Give this a try: boot into Safe Mode according to How to use safe mode on your Mac, run for a while and test to see if the problem persists. Reboot normally and test again.

NOTE 1: Safe Mode boot can take up to 3 - 5 minutes as it's doing the following;

• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts

• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

NOTE 2: if you have a wireless keyboard with rechargeable batteries connect it with its charging cable before booting into Safe Mode. This makes it act as a wired keyboard as will insure a successful boot into Safe Mode.

Are you using Apple Magic Keyboard / Mouse or a 3rd party bluetooth KB/Mouse?

Do you have an external drive attached? Any other electrical devices near your M2 Mac Mini?

It sounds like bluetooth interference which can come from an external drive or other device putting out EMF (Electro-Magnetic Field) such as a fan motor, radio transmitter, the monitor itself, etc. It doesn't take much to disrupt bluetooth wireless signals.

If there is an external drive attached, try moving it as far away from the M2 Mac Mini and your KB/Mouse as you can. If it uses a cable that is not hardwired, you may be able to source a longer cable enabling the drive to be moved further away.

If it's a third party bluetooth KB/mouse such as Logitech MX, it would be better to use the wireless transceiver USB plug instead of bluetooth. It will have better range and reliability over bluetooth.

Dear James, thanks a lot for your quick reply.

The keyboard and mouse are from Apple, so yes, they both are called “Magic”.

And no, I don’t use any other electrical device except the LG screen and 2 little loudspeakers, none of them using Bluetooth.

In fact, up to the purchase of this new equipment, I never used any bluetooth device.

I’ve an external SDD with is connected with a simple USB cable.

The monitor is 20cm away and the spot where its cable enters is about 35cm away. I could put the monitor 7cm more up, i.e. farther away.

I’ve moved the SSD very far away: more than 40cm (I’m lucky I ordered it with a quite long cable).

Right now, I’m very tired, (and the result is doubtful). I will know more tomorrow, because right now I quit (it is late here in Belgium and I haven’t eaten yet).

So tomorrow I will start afresh and let you know.

Isn’t it scary that bluetooth is so vulnerable(?), and to know that Apple doesn’t sell keyboards or mice with a cable anymore, doesn’t really help.

I can’t imagine I’m the only one being disturbed by such an inadequate automatic scrolling.

You are assuming many others experience the same thing. Perhaps they are not disturbed by it because they don't experience the same problems.

I have an M1 Mini with Apple Wireless TouchID keyboard and original Magic Trackpad (and an even bigger monitor). I also have an M2 MacBook Pro. I have never seen anything like that on either Mac (nor on my previous Intel Macs).

Based on your troubleshooting and these symptoms, I would say you have some hardware problems. It could be in the peripherals (if you have wired keyboard and mouse you could eliminate those from the analysis).

I would contact Apple Support and set up an appointment with an Apple Store Genius Bar or Authorized Repair Center.

Sorry When I try to get Support (via your provided link) I receive a message telling me I should update (but I've the latest version) or do a chat (in the past I only lost valuable time with those A.I.-modules; they never helped me) or phone (but the interface doesn’t allow me to enter a fixed number and… the audio of my mobile is broken).

Why doesn’t Apple allow to send a report with partial screen-dumps? I’ve several issues all easily explained wit those partial screen-dumps. And isn’t it true that one image tells more than a thousands words?!

The Magic Mouse is very sensitive and even coming close to touching (hovering) where the scroll wheel would normally be situated can engage the scroll and also introduce inertia. Then you start a scroll but move the mouse and the scrolling inertia carries over and lands on a new window and it can be annoying. It's quite possible this is the root cause of your problems.

Try turning off the inertia feature. In System Settings search for 'inertia' and there should be an option to turn it off. It's buried under accessibility options. Be aware of how you hold the mouse and where you position your fingers. Some people absolutely love the Magic Mouse and others despise it. By no means are you restricted from only using Apple peripherals. Most any KB/Mouse will work with Macs.

I would avoid gaming products with many buttons and RGB lighting. They typically require software that is not available for macOS. Ironically, I had a user today whose Microsoft Teams kept crashing and it was due to a Roccat Leadr gaming mouse which was using no software. I personally love the Logitech MX Series for Mac.

There are 3rd party software tools that give you a lot more control over the mouse and keyboard, etc. BetterTouchTool is among the best.

May 27, 2023 6:25 AM in response to Barney-15E

Dear Barney-15E,

Thank you.

It’s clearly a SW problem because the inappropriate scrolling only happens in the current text windows, or in Safari especially when doing a Google Search.

The sound problem only occur in Music or VLC.

Mostly in Safari, when I open a page it suddenly becomes HUGE, I can't use it anymore, because it also disables the keyboard shortcut to reduce the view (cmd+”-“).

I could contact Apple. I had to reinstall everything… it didn't help, then I had to erase my disk and reinstall everything anew. This too didn't help.

So I'm waiting for the next step.

THE REASON I'M WRITING TO YOU (because I didn't figure how to contact you directly. How to do that?) IS… about that bigger monitor of you. I'm interested. Which one is it, because here in Belgium I didn't find a bigger one, and is there one with a mike and a camera? (because the Macally stuff can't be shipped to Belgium and… designed for use in the US)

Thanks for any info. you can give me.

May 28, 2023 7:40 AM in response to Old Toad

I had a new problem: the video contrast wasn't perfect (although it was put on "normal" in System Settings>Display>Display contrast) AND it has a reddish tone, which I couldn't get rid off, so I did the Safe Boot!

The disk was fine (of course after a full HD erase & reinstalling macOS Ventura) the color and contrast was normal again BUT the scrolling problem reappeared quickly :-(

Maybe I did something wrong because my login items were active.

When in Safe Boot I can only choose my HD, because the other choose doesn't allow me to test anything, isn't it?

So, dear Old Toad, how can I disable the login items AND being able to test, while remaining in Safe Boot?
