I've hit the option key, I have restarted my computer, I have also shut down the computer. Nothing. Any suggestions? I question running third party apps to troubleshoot. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

If a simple reboot of your Mac doesn’t fix things, see if the problem still happens in Safe mode (press and hold the shift key down at startup). It can take much longer to safe boot (5 min) so be patient.

I restarted the computer again(did not change anything).
I shut down the computer again (still did not change anything).
I restarted the computer one more time and finally was able to empty the trash.
Go figure...
