Captions crash final cut

I tried deleting preferences. Seems I can either force quit, or each task can take 5 or 10 minutes, even just clicking on a menu item. One thing that irks me is when adding a caption role it says "These changes affect all clips and projects in library." Isn't that inefficient? I mean, it's just a lane in the timeline, no? Is it actually tacking something onto every single one of the hundreds, maybe thousands of clips? Also, I tried deleting a caption role and it said I couldn't because it was being used by clips. ??? OS 12.6.5, FCP 10.6.5, Mac Studio
