can i import a folder of mp3 files as a list

background..
my father in law has just realized he needs to use itunes to make the most of his new ipod. he has this massive lame library which he used with wmp. rather than import entire albums he just would get a song or two off each album, put it into a folder named as per the artist and then keep adding similar folders like that into a folder called for instance, classical1, until he reached 700mb. at which point he would move on to filling a new folder called classical2 for example. logic was that he could then burn off classical1 as a cd and listen to it in his car. i can kinda see the logic, but i don't think he has thought much about the fact that his cars head unit has a 3.5mm aux in on the front of it! anyway, he doesn't speak english so i can't really have the debate with him. i just want to satisfy the old bugger and let him have his library the way he wants it. worse still, i use a mac and his pc is in portuguese.

problem..
so i tried to recreate the scenario on my mac to at least demonstrate what i need to achieve but it looks like i can't upload a graphic here so i'll try to explain with words. my understanding is usually one would import folders containing files, or files, to the library and distribute to a playlist from there. and playlists can be put into folders, and folders into folders etc. but as my father in law has this existing library, this is an example of what he wants and how it exists on his pc..

music/classical/classical1/artist1/a few files
in this senario, in tunes, i picture artist1 being a playlist whilst classical & clasical1 are folders.

so i guess the question is *can i import a folder of mp3 files as a list?*
i don't want to name the list. i want the list to automatically take on the name of the folder as this guy has hundreds of folders.

or does pops just have to reorganize his collection starting from importing all files to his library?
i welcome alternative suggestions but ideally i want to reproduce his structure in itunes without copying and pasting folder names.

thanks in advance, Graham.

unknown, Windows XP, latest itunes

Are the files all tagged correctly (with at least Album, Artist and track title)?

As you noted, folders in iTunes contain only playlists.

Open iTunes.
Drag the folder from the folder ont eh computer to Playlists on the left side of iTunes.
This will add everything to iTunes and create a new playlist (titled the same as the top folder you are dragging) with everything in that folder.

Can't really do that as the folder structure on the drive is not really related to how it is in iTunes. They are two differnt things.

Disable the iTunes option to *Keep the iTunes Media folder organised*. That way you won't lose the existing folder structure as you drag folders in to create the playlists. There's nothing to stop you dragging in the same same set of files more than once, however to organise it the way you've described, create playlist folders for the upper levels of the structure, e.g. Classical and then create playlists inside for the level above the artist, e.g. *classical1+ classical2* etc.
