Still can't delete (Bookmark) folders in Safari

Even in v16.4 it remains impossible to delete a folder in Bookmarks(on a simple brand new Mac with the latest version);

Noe of the delete keys (back & forth) work, and none of the modifier keys show a delete (or remove) possibility. There also no delete/remove option in the EDIT Menu (nor in any other other menu).

Who can help?

PS: why are there 2 devices connected to my name? And how can I know which is the good one (both are Mac Mini). Here too there seems to be no way to delete the (probably) old one.

Mac mini, macOS 13.3

I think I found an answer. Open a new Safari window. At the window's top left corner, under the red/yellow/green buttons, is a grid of dots. Clicking on that grid will bring up all your folders. Hold down your mouse button while pointing at the folder you want to delete to get the pop-up options that include DELETE! Yahoo, done! AND, if you want to delete a sub-folder, click on the folder containing the sub-folder. Again, as above, hold down your mouse button while pointing at that sub-folder you want to delete to get the pop-up options that include DELETE!

I think I figured it out . . .

Back out of Bookmarks to this screen:

Click on the Untitled folder there and the context menu (ellipsis) lets you delete it. [Not to confuse you, I also intentionally deleted the other tab you see there between screen shots.]

I just stumbled on this while trying to solve the same problem so I hope it works for you. Other answers weren't differentiating bookmarks from folders of bookmarks. I recreated the issue for myself, creating another untitled folder by clicking on the overlapping boxes with the + on them, and then deleted it again. Try this and see if it gets rid of your untitled folders for you.

Hello DLWorldCitizen,

We have steps for deleting a bookmark folder in Safari on your Mac mini. Here is a resource from the Safari User Guide that goes through deleting a bookmark, but the process is similar for a bookmark folder:

Delete a bookmark in Safari on Mac

  1. Open the Safari app.
  2. Click the Sidebar button in the toolbar.
  3. Choose Bookmarks.
  4. Control-click on the folder you wish to delete.
    • This is also known as "right click" depending on your mouse settings.

5. Choose Delete.

As for your "PS" asking why there are two devices connected to your name, we want to clarify what you are referring to. Where are you seeing two devices? Are you looking at devices associated with your Apple ID or another location?

We look forward to hearing back from you.

Take care.

Screen shot would help as I have no "grid of dots" on my Mac in upper left corner under the colored buttons. However, to delete a folder I just two-finger click on my touchpad and choose delete from the context menu. However, for the "Tab Group Favorites" others would like to delete, I can't delete this on mine either. It's possible that it is built-in and cannot be deleted.

You're right for normal folders. As I mentioned in my previous reply (to Soosie_J215), I discovered there were SPECIAL FOLDERS I was trying to delete. Their icon has a square (or rectangle) on top with a star (or is it a plus sign?) in the middle). See image in that same reply.

So probably I put an URL (bing.com) by mistake in that Tab group.

I removed it, but still those 3 folders can't be deleted (and why the heck are there 2 subfolders, both called Untitled? I always give names, to avoid confusion. Being a bit disabled, clarity and cleanliness is a must for me.

But maybe you know how to delete this issue/question or change its title adding:

"my previous description was false" and/or indicate somewhere:

"the first 2 answers were given because of my ignorance about special folders you can't delete".

Have a nice week.

Whether I'm using control, cmd or any other modifier key or combination of modifier keys I never receive a possibility to delete if it's a folder; for book mark a simple press on the delete key is enough. See enclosed partial screen-capture for the possibilities what control-click offers for a folder.

But maybe you can help with another discommodity: When I open the bookmarks all options are closed. Isn't it possible to leave (at least) the favourites open?

yes I'm referring to 2 Mac mini's associated with my ID and I have only 1. The last one (M2) replaced the old one (I suspect it was a M1, although it was the second mac mini I bought).

As for every entry I have to choose between the 2, I would like to know which is which. I hate to lie, to make wrong choices, or, as in this case, being obliged to choose between 2 unspecified (and unverifiable) options.

AHAAA: I just found something! The folders I’m trying to delete are empty — probably ¿special? — bookmark folders, because their icon differs. Just that they seem useless to me, and I dislike garbage…

I'm also having the problem of deleting a folder called Tab Group Favourites. I have followed your instructions with no success at all. I've tried multiple ways of deleting this folder but nothing works. The above method works with bookmarks but not this folder.

Please let me know if you can work this out as it's very frustrating.

Thanks very much :)
