Progress bar after verbose startup

A few weeks ago my Mac Mini (2018, running Ventura 13.3.1) started taking at least a minute longer to boot than it had before. I hadn't added any new software.

I turned on verbose mode. I see the command lines whizzing by for about 20 seconds, then the screen changes to the apple with progress bar: the progress bar moves to somewhere around the middle, stays there for about a minute and then finally moves on again and I get to the login screen.

How can I find out what is going on while the progress bar isn't moving?

Try re-selecting the McIntosh HD and restart...

Many thanks. I tried your two suggestions. Here's what happened:

re-selecting the startup disk didn't change anything.
Safe Boot is much faster, but when I do a normal boot afterwards it's just as slow as before.

I then tried these suggestions from the Apple page on safe mode: I removed all login items, set up a new user account and unplugged all accessories and external drives. Startup is still just as slow. I didn't try reinstalling MacOS, but I think I'd rather just live with a slower startup than go through a complete reinstall.
