To be able to use my external disk for both read and write I need to be logged in as administrator. Can someone tell me how to do this?

System Preferences > User and Groups > Add Account > Follow the screen prompts
If you get an error messages, what is it exactly?
Then you must not be an Admin user; have you looked to confirm this? Admin users can do just about anything unless the OS is damaged.
Have you restarted? If not, do so and retest.
Are there other users? Are any of them Admin?

Thanks, and I have solved the problem in a different way so that I (as you correctly suggested) did not have to become the administrator.
I formatted two of my external disks and after that recovered the lost data. Problem solved!
