Printing from this community?

I had a discussion in this Apple Support Community.  Someone wrote something important.  I want to preserve that discussion for distribution.

I am in Safari.  I did a Command P of the page and saved it as a PDF.  What I got on the PDF were the graphics of my identification and that of my correspondent.  Safari did not print any of the texts of our postings.

I did a screenshot to preserve the conversation, but it captures only what appears in the monitor.  Command P would preserve the full page.

Is there any reason why we cannot print from Safari the full page of a discussion here in this community?

I have this same problem now (October 29, 2023), which, if I recall correctly, did not happen before (don't remember when was the last time I tried to turn a community comment page into pdf, sorry).

I don't believe it is a problem with my computer settings since it has been static for a long time (still running Mojave 10.14.6 because certain apps must now be "rented"). My guess is that something got changed in the way the web pages are defined here because everything in the page is included in the pdf and only the text responses of the various correspondents are dropped (if the response includes an image, the image does get included in the pdf). This happens in both Firefox (115.0.3) and Safari (14.1.2). Needless to say, this does not happen elsewhere so the problem is a discussions.apple.com issue.

Since the OP is using Mac OS 13.3 (and I am using 10.14.6), it is likely that some "new standard" prevents older browsers from including the text of responses in the generated pdf. It is known that printing of web pages is essentially left up to the web designer. Hence, it is likely that a change was made in the latest revision of the code that is used to generate the community pages (everything changes, I suppose). If so, the only hope for a solution to this problem is to have the code revised to solve this issue. How one reports this to Apple is, I guess, up to the gods. :-)

BTW, yes, one can select the text and put it into a text document (or any word processor) but if the comment includes images, well, I guess it might get complicated.

I did not notice this reply earlier since I was using "Print" (aka "command-p") and it did not work in my system (see my post below). Maybe it worked back in May or maybe it worked for you because you have a different version of Firefox.

"Print" does not work in my Safari either, but, as noted below, "Exporting to PDF" does work.

Not about printing but a heads-up. "Distribution" may be in conflict with Apple's intellectual property policies. Research before you leap.

From the Use Agreement we all signed, we each grant Apple a non-exclusive license to use OUR OWN submissions, but that section does NOT address redistributing information posted by another user. (Section B.10). It is a fuzzy area.

It may not be a legal issue, but I know that users here have been very upset when posts they made here showed up on another web site with neither theri attribution nor permission.

If you are considering distribution outside this setting, I strongly recommend working with Apple Legal to insure there are no loose ends. Although I have 20+ years work experience with intellectual property matters, I am not an attorney so can only call attention to potential red flags I spot and point you to the pros.

Thank you for that solution and I can confirm that the resulting pdf in my system does include the text of responses.

The only problem is that the output is a single page. Consequently, the resulting image has an effectively tiny font and much magnifying is needed to access the content. Yes, it does the job but adds some inconvenience which is contrary to the Apple experience, in my opinion (else I would have embraced Windows way back then!).

This is, of course, puzzling because exporting to pdf should use the same method as printing to pdf in converting the web page. The only possible reason, I think, why exporting "works" and printing doesn't is, again, the way the web page is handled in the conversion. Those in charge of discussions.apple.com have to fix this.

But thank you for pointing out that exporting to PDF while in Safari "works."
