Excluding footnotes from word count

Hi,

I'm writing an essay and would like to keep track of my word count without including the footnote word count. Is it possible to exclude the footnotes from the overall word count?

Thanks

What application are you using? The following were tested on macOS Ventura 13.3.1 (a).

  • Pages v13
    • No means to exclude word count in footnotes
  • Word v16.72
    • Click on the word count on the status bar and the dialog allows you to exclude footnotes and endnotes. It still counts the footnote symbol in the body text as a separate word, distorting the word count by one for each footnote character occurrence.
  • LibreOffice Writer v7.5.3
    • Same as MS Word. Counts the footnote character in body text as an extra word.
  • WordService v2.8.3 (Free in Mac App Store)
    • This collection of services has a Statistics service that gets the body text word count correct, ignoring footnote characters in the body text. Four words with footnote is counted as four words, not five.

Hi Anon_Ask1,

Let's check out the steps below which can help:

"You can add a page count to a header, footer, or any other place on a page. The page count updates as you add or remove pages and is visible in the printed document.

  1. Click where you want the page count to appear.
  2. Click the Insert menu button in the toolbar, then choose Page Count.

If your document has more than one section and the page number isn’t set to continue from one section to the next, the page count reflects only the pages in the current section (or any sections that continue its numbering)."

"Turning headers or footers off removes the content from all headers and footers in your document.

  1. In the Document  sidebar, click the Document tab.
  2. Deselect the Header or Footer checkbox.

Note: If you change your mind, press Command-Z on your keyboard to add the deleted text back. Simply selecting the checkbox again won’t retrieve the deleted text."
