Exchange account password incorrect for gmail

My contacts are not syncing and I have a constant prompt on the iphone in contact to enter my password for gmail. I enter the password for my google account and the same error message shows. I changed my password and entered the new one. Still no joy. Is the "Exchange" account something different? My computer is now also showing the wheel of death when I try and update the password. No idea what is going on. Halp!
