Controlled test under laboratory conditions.
The iPhone is not waterproof. If Apple determines that a phone was damaged by water, this will not be covered under the warranty.
So, if you are thinking about taking the phone underwater, make sure that you have the phone backed up before you take the plunge and only do this with an iPhone that you can afford to lose.
We've lost two phones that accidentally fell into the pool and were retrieved within a few minutes. You may have better luck though.

It means under laboratory conditions, using clean water it passed certification for water resistance.
It is not a recommendation for real world use.

As the iPhone is not waterproof, the usual end result would be a device that no longer works.
I just returned from a scuba diving trip in Palau . I accidentally left my iPhone 14 Pro in my board shorts pocket and it went into the tropical waters as I started a dive. I didn’t realise until after the dive and searching onboard the boat . We returned to the dive entry location and snorkelling to find it, my mate spotted and recovered it. It was perfectly fine and has been since . It had spent more than 70minutes at appx 16ft in the pacific tropical water ….amazing !
But in the Apple Website in specification they have mentioned that as it's IP68 Rating which has maximum depth of 6 meters up to 30 minutes?? What's this ??
