I just bought a new Lexus with wi-fi provided by ATT but have a TMobile plan on my iPhone 13. Do I need to purchase the ATT wi-fi package in order to continue to use CarPlay? ATT trial is over tomorrow and I am not sure if I really need to purchase a plan to continue to get maps, messages, phone, etc on the car. Any clarification of what I actually NEED to have in order to use CarPlay is appreciated. I don't want to pay for something that I don't need. Thank you.
Apple CarPlay does not rely on any Wi-Fi supplied by your vehicle. So from that standpoint, feel free to cancel your AT&T Wi-Fi plan.

Having said all that, if you choose to end your AT&T Wi-Fi, you would lose your Lexus’ native (built-in) capability to display, for example, traffic. You would have to rely on whatever you can get from CarPlay.

Your iPhone contains a GPS receiver.
Thank you for your helpful reply.... and sorry for my delayed thank you. This is exactly what I had hoped. The only problem that happened recently is that when in the mountains I was unable to get any signal (neither wi-fi, nor cell using T-mobile) due to the remoteness of the location. In this case I knew where I was but it could be a bit concerning when relying on maps in an unfamiliar area.
I don’t understand the problem you referenced.
Presumably using CarPlay you are displaying Apple’s Map. That map does not rely on a cell signal or Wi-Fi. It uses GPS. So it should work in a remote location.

Interesting. Forgive my ignorance but how does GPS work without wi-fi or cell service? Obviously, I need more time in the car to better understand how this all works. I had my old car for 25 years and it was a great car but it needed replacing so this new “computer on wheels” is a new experience for me.
