Nicknames dont show up on incoming calls even though "Prefer Nicknames" and "Short Names" are on.

I’ve got both “Prefer Nicknames” and “Short Names” enabled but people’s nicknames do not come up when receiving an incoming call. Not sure if it’s not a feature or if i’m doing something wrong.

Ok, I have been using an older phone with iOS 15 and it works on that phone, but with iOS 16 on a newer phone that I have, it does not work. You are doing everything correctly and for some reason the feature is no longer available for phone calls. It will work for messages and email and you can use Siri to say "Call (nickname)" and it will call the correct person. I do not know why this feature is no longer available and our only option is to send feedback to Apple. I just did it and if enough people do, maybe they will fix it or provide an explanation. Sorry to have you go through all of the testing without first checking on my phone that has iOS 16.

In your Recent calls, when you tap the info button next to their name, does it take you to their Contact page showing the information you have added for them or the generic contact that just shows the caller ID name and number? One way to tell, is if you have the option to "Create New Contact" and "Add to Existing Contact", then the number is not linking to the correct contact. You can try "Add to Existing Contact" to see if the will link it.

I have the same issue the only way I got around it is going into Contacts go to a contact click "Edit" click "Add Related Name" click "mother" scroll down click "Add Custom Label" make it called "Full Name" and put their name there and then I put the nickname in the spot for the name at the top after you creat it once you dont have to create it again and if you search there name in contacts it will still show up!

This problem seems to pop up periodically, though it never seems to affect huge numbers of people so it's always hard to figure out what the cause is. It doesn't appear to be limited to anyone operating system. I have no problem with iOS 16.6 and nicknames.

As iOS 17 has not been released, it's not possible to know what it will evenutally do or not do. Discussion of beta software is not permitted.
