Mac OS Sierra cannot be installed on a partition of an external drive

Hi there,

After partitioning an external drive (4T) to a new partition (80G), and formatting this new partition to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and GUID Partition Map, I tried to install OS Sierra on this partition.

After the system rebooted, it entered directly to the OS (also Sierra) already existent on my MacBook pro (mid 2012, Intel chip) instead of continuing installation.

How to solve this issue?

Some additional information

  1. Monterrey can be installed on the same partition (80GB) from another MacBook pro;
  2. Mac OS Sierra ("Install macOS Sierra" in Application folder in MacBook pro mid-2012) can be installed on another USB drive (32 G).

Thanks in advance.

Regards,

WYM

Sometimes a Mac will boot to the internal drive after finishing Phase 1 of an install to an external drive. Have you tried Option Booting and selecting the external volume to see if Phase 2 of the Sierra install will finish?
