I have charged magic mouse and magic keyboard but it wont connect to my IMAC - the screen indicates to charge them both and switch on which I have done but the IMAC wont register them

If you can't connect your Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse, or Magic Trackpad to your Mac - Apple Support
If it doesn't help, if you have wired mouse and keyboard, connect them and open Bluetooth preference to delete your MagicMouse and MagicKeyboard from Bluetooth device list.
Then research bluetooth devices to find and select your MagicMouse and MagicKeyboard and connect them on your iMac.
