I have an iPhone registered to my Apple ID, but it has a temporary number which I cannot edit. The serial number, IMEI and model number etc are all correct but the number is not. How can I retain the actual phone in my iCloud/Apple ID but edit the phone number

Is this a trusted number for two factor authentication? To edit your list of trusted items refer to the section: About trusted phone numbers and trusted devices in the document Two-factor authentication for Apple ID - Apple Support
To see, add, or change your trusted phone numbers:
- On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch: Go to Settings > your name > Password & Security. Next to Trusted Phone Number, tap Edit.
- On a Mac: Choose Apple menu > System Settings (or System Preferences), then click your name (or Apple ID). Click Password & Security, then add or remove a trusted phone number.
- In a web browser: Go to the Account Security section of https://appleid.apple.com/
Update: I think the problem has rectified itself, as the correct number is now showing up after signing out of everything and signing back in.

Thanks. I have the correct number in Trusted Numbers. It's just that in my device list the phone shows the temporary number only, so I can't link it to FaceTime and iMessage which I need to do. The correct physical phone is showing up but not the correct phone number. So when I try to link that phone to FaceTime, it won't let me.
Not sure if I'm explaining the problem, but the net effect is I can't get FaceTime and iMessage to link to the correct number
