My wife has an iPhone 8, iOS 16.4.1(a). I have an iPhone 13 Max Pro with iOS 16.4.1.(a). In the last week, photos sent to her in the text app have arrived as icons only (see graphic). I have no problems receiving photos by text app on my phone. Has anyone experienced this? It just started.

Using your suggestion to choose photos from the “photo” icon, I texted the same photos to my wife as I had earlier today and they worked this time. I’ve never had to do that before but will use it now. Previously I’d choose the camera icon to the left of the text message window and then choose the top left “graphic” icon then chose my pic. Thanks so much!
Also make sure MMS Messaging is turned on at Settings > Messages
You will also get this if you do not have enough storage space on your phone.

That’s very interesting. I never did that. I’ve only used that camera icon when including a photo I am taking “now” - when composing the message.
UPDATE - I had previously posted incorrect information here about iPhone vs. iPad Camera. It was wrong, so I removed it.

Thanks for taking time to respond. I went in there and deleted about 4gigs of unused apps after you mentioned that it could at some time cause an issue for receiving photos through texts.

Is this being used to create the photo? It should be.
Actually, that is not required as the screenshot shows iMessages are being used and the original poster said “iPhone to iPhone photos”.
Just checked…
MMS was already on and about 12gig of space available in memory
I’m getting this message on every incoming picture. Plenty of storage, mms turned on
