Can I reset the iphone screen lock without erasing the device?

I want to reset my screen lock passcode without erasing the phone. Why do I need to erase my device when I can enter the apple id to turn off the find my device? This dosen't make any sense.

Probably the whole reason to erase the device if someone else finds the device and they are trying to break in but here we also have the ownership proof, when the device prompts to enter the login for Find My Device - This is why I believe apple is dumb. I'm frustrated.

iPhone 14 Pro Max, iOS 16

You can't do that because the data on your phone is locally encrypted and the key does not reside anywhere but on the device itself.

This is why you need to be making regular backups, which Apple has made brain dead simple. either you back it up to iCloud, which will happen automagically every night when the phone is plugged in and connected to WiFi, or you back it up to your computer.
