Word document

I have a document created in Word (rather old version, 12.0.0), and I want to insert a section in the final part of the document and remove the page numbers only for that section, but every time I try, all the page numbers for the entire document disappear. What am I doing wrong?

When you say 'insert a section', do you mean figuratively? or do you mean you've used Word's Section feature to break your document into different logical sections.

You can make a new Section (Insert -> Break -> Section Break) to create a new logical section in the document.

Initially, this section will have the same Header and Footer as the preceding section, but there is an option to change this.

TBH, I don't recall where it is in Word 2012, but in the current version it's in the Header and Footer ribbon, under the Link to Previous option:

With this turned on, the header will match the previous section. Turn it off to give this section a different header/footer.

> I choose Break, then the "Section Break (Continuous)" option

That may be the problem - I think inherently 'continuous' implies that the new section is attached to the first.

In my trial I opted for 'Section Break (Next Page)' which forces the section to start on a new page, and the header marker is labelled 'Header - Section 2' to clarify the difference.

If you think about it logically, when you section break occurs mid-page, Word can't know which Header or Footer to apply since both of them are relevant for the current page, hence the need to start a new page.

Many thanks, Camelot, for your prompt reply, but I'm still struggling. I position the cursor on the page previous to where I want the new section, and click. Then from the Insert pull-down menu, I choose Break, then the "Section Break (Continuous)" option. The cursor blinks on the first page of the new section. Then I go back to the Insert menu, pull down to Document Elements and choose "Headers". (There's a separate option for Footers.) The ribbon that comes up looks nothing like the one in your reply, and has no "Link To Previous" option, so I still can't figure out how to remove the page numbers from this section. Any ideas?
