What can you use the “points” for?

They really only have one purpose. When you reach Level 6, you have access to the Lounge. There, you can directly ask the hosts questions, point out issues with the forums, etc. It's also a bit more relaxed and members talk about non-technical topics for a bit of fun.

As far as I know, points are just to show you your status in the community. It works kind of like karma on Reddit.

For some users, it is a "status" thing. Apple will send you a small gift at different point levels, but I don't know what they are. Frankly, most of us who answer questions regularly don't pay much attention at all to the "points".
