Can you try the keyboard on another Mac to see if the problem remains or not?
Give this a try: Reset NVRAM or PRAM on your Mac - Apple Support (for Intel Macs) and Mac startup key combinations - Apple Support (for both types)

Normally space bar not working means you have to turn off Full Keyboard Access in your Accessibility settings.
OK! Problem wasn't due to faulty keyboard. Keyboard browing was ON on keyboard configuration.
