Opening pictures that are received as heic
Pictures that are sent to me via text are coming through as heic and I am unable to view them. imessage is activated not sure why this recently started happening ?

The support article Using HEIF or HEVC media on Apple devices includes a section that may be relevant to the behavior you're encountering:
"If sharing this media using other methods, such as AirDrop, Messages, or email, the media might automatically be shared in a more compatible format, such as JPEG or H.264, depending on whether the receiving device supports the newer media format." (emphasis added)
The device that is used to share the media and the method that it's being shared may impact your ability to open or access that content. That article also includes steps to manually convert such files.
If the behavior continues and you're not able to discern a pattern to the files that arrive this way, reach out to Apple Support directly for further investigation into this.
