how to connect MacBook and iMac?
I'm trying to use an older iMac as a monitor for my MacBook and the thunderbolt cable isn't working....

The feature you seem to want is called Target Display Mode, and there are very specific hardware and software requirements:
Use your iMac as a display with target display mode - Apple Support describes the system requirements for both Macs.
For example, the iMac must have macOS High Sierra or earlier installed, the MacBook must have macOS Catalina or earlier installed, and the cable connecting the two must be Thunderbolt, Thunderbolt 2, or a Mini DisplayPort cable.
